The Art
Kōdō
Kōdō is one of Japan's three classical arts of refinement, alongside tea ceremony and flower arranging — and the least visible to outsiders, since its subject can't be photographed. A gathering is small, formal, and quiet: incense is passed hand to hand, held briefly, and never repeated for a guest who wasn't paying attention the first time.
